Piotr Pałys, Lusatia in Czechoslovakian politics in years 1945-1948

Right after the end of the War, representatives of Sorbian national movement associated the future of their nation with the reborn Czechoslovakia. However, Prague had no intention to put forward any official territorial claims for Lusatia. It restricted its actions to careful attempts of sounding out Soviet Union’s stance on possible participation of Czechoslovakian army in occupation of Germany. Finally, on 11th January 1946, inner cabinet decided that it will act in order to liberate Sorbian nation, however it also pointed out that this issue should be of interest for all Slavic nations. Having said that, further diplomatic acts undertaken by the Sorbs were meet with rather reserved reception. In the end, after the coup that took place in February 1948, Sorbian issue was officially recognized as an internal affair of Soviet Occupation Zone, which soon became East Germany.
