Emilia Deutsch, Linguistic picture of a woman in the background of the linguistic picture of a man as presented in Upper-Lusatian idioms and phrases.

The material which will show how the linguistic picture of a woman looks like in the background of the linguistic picture of a man in the Upper-Lusatian idioms and phrases was selected from the Přisłowa a přisłowne hrónčka a wusłowa Hornjołužiskich Serbow dictionary by Radyserb-Wjeli (Budyšin 1997) and Hornjoserbski frazeologiski słownik dictionary by Anatolij Ivčenka and Sonja Wölkowa (Budyšin 2004). The idioms connected with the sex stereotypes were choosen on the basis of frequency of the words: žona and muž (or žoniny and mužski). The analisys of the given idioms and phrases showed that woman are generally perceived as inferior to men. They are ascribed with such a foul traits of character as deceitfulness, garrulity, willingness to subordinate men, foolishness, inability to act in co-operative and so on. Behaviours like drunkenness or posession of money are evaluated differently with regards to both sexes. As principle, men in Upper-Lusatian idioms are presented in a positive way.
